Kolkata: West Bengal Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Tuesday said that Public Prosecutor Sarbani Ray has been removed from all government related case.
Chandrima addressing the state legislature said that Public Prosecutor Sharbani Ray has failed to seek maximum punishment for the rape convicts and violated he government’s stance of maximum punishment for the culprits.
Sarbani Ray had been removed from the Panel for not seeking maximum punishment for the Park street rape convicts.
State law minister Chandrima Bhattacharya had earlier said, “How could the public prosecutor say how much punishment for the convicts? She had fought for the government to prove them guilty. Without instruction, she gave her opinion. This is not acceptable. So she has been removed from the government panel. She said minimum term was fine.”
Earlier PP Sarbani Ray said in a court that the three accused in the 2012 case were not directly involved in the actual crime and should be given the minimum punishment of 10 years in jail.
The special public prosecutor hit back saying, “I don’t care if the government is upset. I have acted according to law.” The main accused is in hiding. It is known who are helping him to stay under cover, said Sarabani Roy.
The Bankshal court on Friday announced 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 Lakh each for three convicts of Park Street rape case Roman Khan, Sumit Bajaj and Naseer Khan. However, two accused Muhammad Ali Khan and Kader Khan are still at large.
