Brussels : Belgian authorities announced Thursday the arrest of a ninth suspect linked to the terrorist attacks in Paris last month, a Belgian man whom they said had been in contact several times with the cousin of the suspected ringleader.
The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office identified the man only as Abdoullah C, born in 1985. It said he was arrested Tuesday, the same day an arrest warrant was issued against him for terrorist murders and participation in the activities of a terrorist organization.
The authorities said the possible extension of his detention would be decided Thursday.
They said the man was suspected of having several contacts with Hasna Ait Boulahcen, the niece of Abdelhamid Abaaoud, believed to be the ringmaster of the multi-pronged Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. Both were killed in a police raid on their northern Paris hideout following the worst attacks on French soil since World War II.
Although the man was arrested earlier in the week, federal prosecutors told the Reuters news agency Thurdsay that they kept the arrest quiet in order not to alert potential accomplices.
On Monday, police detained five people in several searches in Brussels, but all were released later that day, the news agency reported.
