Panchayat 2018: Scribes Attack On Nomination Day, 6 Arrested


Kolkata: Six persons has been arrested on Tueasday after Several journalists were assaulted or confined during Monday’s poll-related violence.

Seven Anandabazar Patrika reporters and photojournalists were among those attacked on Monday. Sebabrata Mukherjee, Photographers Gautam Pramanik, Safiullah Islam and Kaushik Saha were beaten up in Murshidabad, and Sabyasachi Islam in Rampurhat. Suchandra Dey, the daily’s correspondent in Katwa, was chased and attacked by alleged BJP supporters before policemen. Suchandra was covering a clash between two parties.

In Kolkata, two journalists Prajna Saha and Aryabhatta Khan were forcibly taken away from in front of the district magistrate”s office in Alipore where they had gone to cover the filing of nominations. They were physically and verbally abused by their abductors before their release.

On April 11, journalists held a silent protest in Kolkata demanding action against the assaults. Earlier one photojournalist was forcibly undressed, illegally confined and beaten while other journalists and photojournalists were attacked in Alipore, Kolkata, West Bengal on April 9, 2018 while they were covering the filing of nomination papers for the polls to the local bodies (panchayats).
