Kolkata: A division bench of Calcutta High Court on Friday asked police and the election commission to file separate reports on May 4 detailing the security measures for voters and poll personnel in the panchayat elections.
The bench, headed by acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya, passed the order on a PIL filed by an organisation of state employees which apprehends “harassment” of staff to be put on election duty.
The court also asked the government to specify whether it planned an insurance scheme for employees deployed in elections. The State Government Employees’ Council – which claims to be an apolitical organisation – said the 2.92 lakh employees who would be engaged in the panchayat poll duty fear “massive chaos and untoward incidents” in the single-phase voting on May 14. Sources said the organisation had BJP’s backing.
