Kolkata: Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury on Monday challenged Mamata Banerjee to hold “mock panchayat polls” and win the Murshidabad zilla parishad that Trinamul had already won “uncontested”.
“Trinamul has already won the Murshidabad zilla parishad uncontested. But I challenge her (Mamata) to conduct a mock election and win the zilla parishad in a free and fair way. If she wins, I will resign as a parliamentarian,” Chowdhury told a meet the press programme organised by the Calcutta Press Club.
Chowdhury claimed that even during the Left regime, the Congress had been successful in winning the Murshidabad zilla parishad, a feat that even Mamata Banerjee as opposition leader could not achieve in any Bengal district.
“Murshidabad, Malda and North Dinajpur had been Mamata’s target to weaken the Congress in Bengal,” Chowdhury said before adding that she was helping the growth of the BJP and the RSS in the state.
He accused the chief minister of playing the role of a “political agent” of the BJP in the proposed Federal Front of regional parties.
