New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing debate on Yakub Memon’s capital punishment over his role in 1993 Mumbai blast and nefarious plot to paint the judgment in a communal colour, astudy has revealed that only 72 Muslims have been hanged out of a total of 1,414 convicts who faced the gallows since 1947.
There is a certain attempt to give the whole matter a communal colour with some people alleging that Yakub is facing death because he belong to certain community. Most prominent among such voices is one of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi who has said that Memon is being executed because he is a Muslim.
Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi had accused the government “of making moves against Muslims”. He claimed that according to the chargesheet, Memon was innocent. “He did run away with his brother but he has not committed any huge crime,” said the Maharashtra legislator.
However, a report by Death Penalty Research Project of the National Law University (NLU), Delhi shows that of the 1,414 prisoners in the available list of convicts hanged in post-Independence India, only 72 are Muslims. Accroding to a report pubished in an English daily, this is not even 5 per cent of the total executions. The report, however, clarifies its list is not meant to be a reference for the total number of prisoners hanged in India since 1947.
