One killed, 18 injured in Nigeria suicide attack


Abuja: One person was killed and 18 others injured when a female suicide bomber blew herself up in the Nigerian city of Gombe. President Goodluck Jonathan who was attending a campaign rally had a close escape since the blast occurred few minutes after he left the spot.

The Nigerian President is contesting the elections against former military ruler Mahammadu Buhari. The elections are scheduled on 14 February.

Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks in the run up to the elections.

According to Police, the bomber blew herself up near a car adding that a female passerby was killed in the attack.

“The president had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened”, said an eye witness.

Mr Jonathan was addressing the rally in the city after it came under attack of the terrorists who triggered two blasts killing five people.
