Hyderabad: Amidst high security, the Ganesh Chaturthi festival started today, with Hyderbadis offering prayers at different pooja pandals across the city.
The attraction this year among the city people is a 58-feet tall Shaktipeetha Sivanagendra Maha Ganpati. This attractive Ganesh idol has been installed by the organisers of famous Khairatabad Ganesh.
Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh ESL Narasimhan and his wife offered prayers today inaugurating the pandal for the general public.
The state government has requested people to use clay made Ganesh idols this time instead of PoP idols.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) as well as various other departments distributed clay Ganpati idols to the people as part of the Green Ganesha movement.
The Hyderabad High Court had also suggested to install not more than 15-feet tall Ganesh idols while the city police has also requested various organisers to keep the height of idols in mind. In order to keep the Husain Sagar Lake pollution free, the GHMC has made extra efforts and made artificial ponds for Ganpati Visarjan.
As Ganesh Chaturthi and Eid-ul-Adha fall on the same day this year, so Hyderbad city police is not taking any chances on the security. The city police has deployed around 20 thousand police personnel to ensure peaceful celebration of both the festivals.
Apart from the police force, the administration has installed 12 thousand CCTV cameras to monitor the security of 40 thousand pandals across the city.
