New York: The oldest living person in the world celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday in New York. She is the daughter of sharecroppers and granddaughter of slaves.
Susannah Mushatt Jones celebrated the occasion privately with family but a public celebration is planned for Tuesday.
She was born in Alabama in 1899 and moved to New Jersey in 1922 after completing her graduation from high school and then to New York where she worked as a housekeeper and childcare provider.
Jones had retired from her job in 1965. She said that lots of sleep is the secret to her longevity, Guinness said in confirming her status as the oldest living person. She also said she never smoked or drank.
