Kolkata: Soon after Firhad Hakim was made the next Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, state BJP president Dilip Ghosh questioned, “Does none of the 122 members of the municipality have the eligibility to be the Mayor?”
According to the present law, in order to be the Mayor, one has be to a councillor first. But Firhad Hakim maybe a minister or MLA but not a councillor. Hence, the question has been raised in the opposition circle.
According to Dilip, “It is being understood that who ever has been elected as the councillor till date, has no eligibility. In that case, minister Firhad Hakim has to be made the Mayor.” However, BJP has supported the amendment bill in the legislative assembly.
However, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, “All 122 are eligible to be Mayors. Firhad (Bobby) is being given the responsibility.”
Banerjee also said, “Someone has to be given the responsibility. Then why was Narendra Modi made the prime minister? Why was Rajnath Singh not made. Why is BJP doing campaign in the state using Amit Shah and no other? 122 councillors will elect the mayor today (Thursday) evening. It was needed to amend the law. Before this, I had told Panchayat minister Subrata (Mukherjee). But it was not possible then.”
