Kolkata: Yes, there is one renowned nobel prize winner who had cancer and it was diagnosed just at the age of 18 years. Who is he ?
We are talking about renowned Indian economist, Amartya Sen, who turned 82 on November 3, that is, just 2 days ago. He was born in 1933 and in 1998, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work in welfare economics.
We know about Amartya Sen. But do we know enough ?
An interesting fact about Amartya Sen is that he suffered from cancer at a relatively young age. As an undergraduate of Presidency University, Amartya Sen developed cancer of the mouth just at the age of 18 years and was treated with high doses of radiation at a hospital in Kolkata. In 1971, he was told the cancer had returned, which later turned out to be a misdiagnosis.
It is said that Sen was named by Rabindranath Tagore. His mother Amita Sen was a writer who took part in the dance drama productions of Tagore. On her request, Tagore christened the boy.
The 1943 Bengal Famine had influenced young Sen deeply, even though his affluent family did not suffer from it. He received the Nobel Prize in Economics in the year 1998 for his contributions to welfare economics. According to Sen, “even impoverished societies can improve the well-being of their least advantaged members”. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1999.
Despite of such hurdle in life, he turned victorious against death. He surpassed all obstacles in life and gained victory with a big smile.
