Nipah Virus Outbreak: Schools To Remain Closed


Karala: Nipah virus claiming 16 lives in Kerala’s Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, the southern state’s health minister has issued a warning that there could be a possible second outbreak, adding to the woes of people across the state.

The government announced that schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain shut till June 12. They were supposed to re-open on June 5.

Social gatherings have been called off and people advised to remain indoors. Kozhikode District Collector has requested courts to stop operations till the situation improves. A team led by Director Health RL Sarita is monitoring the situation.

The death toll following the outbreak of Nipah virus continues to rise in Kerala, claiming one more life this morning. So far, 18 people have died and nearly 1,945 are under medical supervision.
