New York Blast Suspect’s Wife, In-Laws Arrested In Dhaka

Dhaka: Bangladesh Police arrested the wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law of Manhattan blast suspect Akayed Ullah. Ullah, who was arrested, had apparently set off a homemade pipe bomb in a crowded New York City commuter hub.

A Bangladesh Police source said that the Counter Terrorism Unit (CT) took his relatives away from their residence in Maneshwar Road, Dhaka city.

Meanwhile, the New York Police Department charged bomb suspect Akayed Ullah with making a terror threat, supporting an act of terrorism and criminal possession of a weapon.

City Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said, “Three people are being interrogated.” The three being Akayed’s relatives. Akayed’s wife Jannatul lives in her father’s house with her six-month-old child and mother Mahfuza Akter. City Officer Saiful said that his wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law were being interrogated about Akayed.

After Akayed’s name was disclosed, police confirmed the location of his family in Bangladesh. A city official said they received Akayed’s father’s home address at noon.

Akayed Ullah, who went to the US from Bangladesh in 2011 on a visa available to certain relatives of US citizens, was born and raised in Dhaka, said villagers. “His father Sanaullah left Sandwip at the age of 22 and came to Dhaka. He got married here and his son Akayed Ullah was born in Dhaka,” said villagers who wished to remain unnamed.
