New Faces With A New Goal


Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee, Trinamool Congress supremo gave a surprise by fielding two Tollywood actors Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan from Jadavpur and Basirhat Parliamentary seats respectively.

Mimi Chakraborty shot to fame for her acting in Posto, Gangster, Yoddha opposite Deb and Sudhu Tomari Jonyo among others.

“I am thankful to the Chief Minister as she has selected me as a candidate. I seek everybody’s help and cooperation to discharge my duties,” Chakraborty said.

Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat is very important from where Professor Sugata Bose was elected in 2014.

Nusrat Jahan, another Tollywood actor, will contest from Basirhat. Zulfikar, Har Har Byomkesh, Bolo Durga Mai Ki are some of Jahan’s famous films. She said: “I am slightly nervous as I have to serve so the people and voice their demands and I think I will be able to serve them well. Similar to the love and blessings that I have received from the masses as an actor, I’m hopeful I will get the same as a candidate.”

Basirhat Lok Sabha seat is also important as it is situated close to the Indo-Bangla border and there is a mixed population.

Mahua Moitra will contest from Krishnanagar. Moitra did her graduation in Mathematics and Economics from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. Later, she joined JP Morgan in New York city and London. She was the vice-president of JP Morgan when she joined politics in 2016.

Mala Roy, a veteran TMC politician, is currently the chairperson of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

“South Kolkata is an important seat and I am thankful that party chief Mamata Banerjee has bestowed her faith in me. I have always worked for the people and I seek everybody’s cooperation.

Rupali Biswas, the widow of Satyajit Biswas, who was murdered on February 10 will be celebrating her 25th birthday soon. “She lost her husband just a few days ago. I thought we should stand by her and she is our candidate from Ranaghat,” said Banerjee while announcing her name.

Beerbaha Soren will be contesting from Jhargram Lok Sabha seat. A teacher by profession, her name was suggested unanimously by the local leaders. “The leaders have suggested her name and she is our candidate,” said Banerjee.

Subrata Mukerjee, state’s Panchayats and Rural Development minister will contest from Bankura. Mukherjee is the senior most member in Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet. He was the youngest minister in Siddhartha Shankar Roy’s ministry between 1972 and 1977.

“I know the area. Mamata Banerjee has nominated me and I am grateful to her. I will start my campaign soon.” Amar Singh Rai will contest from Darjeeling on a TMC ticket.
