Diamond Harbour: Bengal government on Thursday has thrown open the Namkhana Bridge in South 24-Parganas district and with it has brought a weekend sea beach destination closer to Kolkata.
State public works department minister Aroop Biswas on Thursday inaugurated the bridge that runs over the Hatania Doania river along National Highway-12. Sunderbans development minister Manturam Pakhira and Trinamool MLAs from nearby constituencies were present on the occasion.
With the opening of the 3-km long bridge built using both concrete and iron ropes, it will now be easier for tourists to visit the sea beach destination Bakkhali located close to the Sunderbans.
But now on, one can drive straight from Kolkata to Bakkhali without losing 30-odd minutes on the ferry. Bus services from Kolkata to Bakkhali are likely to start soon making to easier for tourists who are not driving their own vehicle.
Namkhana Bridge has been built by the National Highway Authority of India with assistance from the state government. The work had started in 2015 and has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs 228-crore.
