Bengaluru: Recently imprisoned AIADMK general secretary Sasikala Natarajan seems to be having difficulty falling asleep in her new environment. Lodged at Bengaluru’s Parapanna Agrahara Central prison, Natarajan, who shares her cell with two other inmates, was spotted staying awake as late into the night as 1:45 AM.

Further, Sasikala was seen talking to her inmates, including her niece J. Ilavarsi, until 11:30 PM. According to a report, a jailer at the Parappana Agrahara prison is reported to have said, “She was seen awake til 1:45 AM. And as early as 5:30 she was seen stretching. Sasikala rose at 5:30 AM on Thursday and stretched her legs in the cell before sipping coffee an hour later.”

Commenting on her schedule on the previous day, the jailer said, “Sasikala rose at 5:30 AM on Thursday and stretched her legs in the cell before sipping coffee an hour later.” Apparently, the AIADMK general secretary was not hungry for dinner at 6:30 PM last night. However, her niece J Ilavarsi was able to persuade her to have some curd rice. Apart from the rice, her menu for Thursday included Puliyogare (tamarind rice) for breakfast and Chapati with curry and a bowl of rice for lunch.

Chinnamma’s sleeping troubles could also be attributed to the fact that she has been having to sleep on the prison floor due to the lack of either a cot or a cement bed. Acknowledging her sleeping troubles, AIADMK’s Karnataka unit Secretary, V Pugazhendhi told reporters,

“Chinnamma could not sleep well and was restless as she had to sleep on the floor in a 10×8 feet ordinary cell in the women’s barracks after jail officials denied her request for a mattress.”

Registered as prisoner no. 9234, Sasikala has been assigned the task of making candles and incense sticks for the price of Rs 50 every day. Her request of being accorded VIP treatment, which included the provisions of a separate cell with a TV, helper, mineral water and 24-hr hot water, was denied by prison authorities. Instead, the only luxuries provided to her are three white sarees for daily wear, and 24-hour running water.

Sasikala Natarajan was on Tuesday convicted in a disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court of India. Her request for some time before serving the sentence was denied by the apex court that said, ““You know the meaning of the word immediately. We do not intend to pass any order on this. We are not going to change anything in the judgement.”
