Haldia, Howrah: Opposition leaders of the state have claimed before Election Commission (EC) that Nandigram—which is situated in East Midnapore is terror free now. A team of EC officers sat in an all-party meeting in Nandigram BDO office on Saturday. The EC team had 5 members, that was led by special observer—VK Singh. It is in this meeting, where this claim was made by opposition parties.
The central forces were deployed in the state much before announcing the poll dates. One company of the force has been posted in Nandigram, which saw violent land movement in 2007; that made headlines everywhere. Since then, the area is under vigilance of the EC—which thinks that during polls, among the East Midnapore district this area could see maximum violence. This hypothesis has led EC members to rush towards Nandigram on the second day of their district tour itself.
EC members held a meeting in Nandigram BDO office that lasted for around fifteen minutes. EC members enquired about the situation in Nandigram now—whether it is volatile like before or not? Opposition parties made a surprise claim that now the situation is not volatile in this area. Although, left front leaders were absent in the meeting.
On the other hand, special observer’s team of EC met administrative officials today in Howrah District Magistrate’s office. The EC team discussed all law and order related issues with the District Magistrate.
