Brisbane: World number 1 Rafael withdraws from Brisbane International on Thursday owing to a knee injury but he intends to play in Australian Open next month. The Spaniard was due to begin his season at Brisbane this weekend but he pulled out of the tournament.
“I am sorry to announce I won’t be coming to Brisbane this year,” Nadal posted on his Twitter account on Thursday. “My intention was to play but I am still not ready after last year’s long season and the late start of my preparation,” he added.
Nadal also mentioned he intends to play in year’s first Grand slam, Australian Open beginning January 15. Nadal has a stellar 2017 where he won six trophies including two Grand slams claiming his 10th French Open title along with 3rd US Open.
Reports casting doubt over Nadal’s recovery from an injury to his right knee surfaced last week when he pulled out of an exhibition in Abu Dhabi this week and took at least four days off from practice.
