Kolkata: The Red and Golds have decided to employ their former star-striker Biswajit Bhattacharya as the new head coach for the upcoming season. The former Red and Golds striker will take charge immediately, and has been given a 1 year contract as he is expected to guide the team through the Calcutta Football League (CFL) as well as the 2015-16 I-League.
Biswajit Bhattacharya had coached George Telegraph in the I-League 2nd division last season. While being asked about the preparations, the gaffer explained that the upcoming CFL was their imminent target as they were on the brink of history.
“My primary target is to win the CFL, because it is our chance to equal the 1970-75 record by winning six back to back CFL Premier Division trophies, which we can achieve now.”
When asked about preparations for the upcoming I-League, the former India striker said that he hadn’t still decided on the final details.
“Of course we will have a proper pre-season, but whether it will be on Kolkata or outside, we haven’t decided yet,” said the former Mariners manager.
Bhattacharya who had been the coach of Mohun Bagan in two stints in 2006 and 2010, recounted that saving Mohun Bagan from relegation in 2010 was the best moment of his career.
“I think the highlight of my career so far has been keeping a club up in the I-League when it was in dire condition,” said Bhattachrya without naming Mohun Bagan.
