Krishnanagar: A Trinamool Chhatra Parishad leader was arrested from his hideout near Calcutta airport on Sunday night in connection with the May 23 murder of Nadia BJP worker Biplab Sikdar.
The 29-year-old accused is a former general secretary of the students’ union at Santipur college. He had fled as he was among the 17 persons named in an FIR.
A police officer said Manoj was produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Ranaghat on Monday and remanded in eight days of police custody.
About 11.40pm on May 23, Sikdar, a booth committee president of the BJP in Haripur-Methirdanga village, was shot dead at his home when he was preparing to go to bed.
A gang of armed miscreants had arrived at Sikdar’s house, disconnected power supply and at least three of them entered the home and shot him from close range.
Sikdar’s wife Sankari and his son claimed that he had been killed because of his refusal to join the Trinamul Congress and putting up a resistance with support of the villagers during the panchayat polls on May 14 when miscreants led by Manoj allegedly tried to capture a polling station.
Police sources said on that day Manoj and his associates had hurled bombs and fired a few rounds, but eventually they had to flee when villagers retaliated chasing them.
