New Delhi: The Supreme Court on July 27, will hear Yakub Memon’s petition challenging his execution order in the 1993 Mumbai blast case.

The 1993 Mumbai Blast convict Yakub Memon on Thursday had moved Supreme Court seeking a stay on his hanging, scheduled for July 30. Yakub Memon’s lawyer had filed plea in SC saying that other legal remedies are still available so Memon’s death sentence should be stayed.

On Tuesday, the apex court had rejected a curative petition by Yakub Memon, paving the way for his hanging on July 30. A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu had earlier in the day rejected Memon’s curative petition, saying the grounds raised by him do not fall within the principles laid down by the apex court in 2002.

The serial blasts in March 1993 had left 257 dead and over 700 injured. Yakub Memon is the only convict whose death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected his mercy petition in May 2014.
