Washington: An elementary-school bus crash has killed “multiple” children and sent many more to the hospital, according to local TV reports in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
According to Police Chief Fred Fletcher, 35 schoolchildren from Woodmore Elementary were on the bus Monday afternoon, and 23 were taken to area hiosptials.
The accident was a single-vehicle crash and the driver is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
A neighbor told Fox Chattanooga that children were escaping from the roof hatch after the crash.
At the state Capitol in Nashville, Gov. Bill Haslam called the crash “a tragic event” and offered assistance.
“We’re going to do everything we can to assist in any way,” he said in a statement. “It’s a sad situation anytime there’s a school bus with children involved, which there is in this case. We will do everything we can to assist in what I think is going to be a very sad situation.”
