Kolkata: The reconciliation between Mamata Banerjee and Mukul Roy seems to have come to a full circle on Friday with the latter visiting Trinamool supremo’s Kalighat residence after 9 months. Mukul Roy toady went to Mamata’s residence in the evening and had a 40 minute meeting with her. After the meeting Roy said that this is normal meeting and there is no unnatural.
Roy, the one-time second in command of Trinamool Congress, had stopped visiting Banerjee’s residence after he was quizzed by CBI in the Saradha Scam for the second time on 30 January last year. During the questioning, Roy reportedly told CBI “more than what was needed” about the multi-crore scam.
Soon after that, the founder general secretary of the Trinamool was removed from the post by Mamata Banerjee on 28 February. Ever since, Roy was reduced to an ordinary party member and he stayed away from all activities of the Trinamool Congress.
While no word came out either from Banerjee or Roy as to what transpired in the meeting; sources said that the two have discussed “various aspects of the party organisation and the prevailing political situation.”
Political observers opine that today’s meeting has made it concerte that Roy would soon be back into a central role in the Trinamool Congress. This may happen latest by the first week of February.
Earlier in the day, Roy attended a Trinamool Congress 18th foundation day event at Halisahar in North 24-Parganas. There, speaking to journalists he said that Trinamool Congress has proved its electoral might in all the elections and by-elections since 2011.
“Let CPI-M and Congress form an alliance, I still think Trinamool will have an easy sail in Assembly polls this year,” he said.
