‘Mrinmoyee’ Of ‘Teen Kanya’ Turns 72 Today, Twitter Showers With Wishes


Kolkata: Aparna Sen, the critically acclaimed Indian filmmaker, script writer, and actress. She is the winner of three National Film Awards and eight international film festival awards. People around the world took to twitter to wish her 72nd birthday. Tollywood celebs too showered wishes on social media to wish on the Bengal beauty’s birthday.CM Mamata Banerjee also  took on to twitter to wish her on her birthday.

Aparna Sen was born in 25th October 1945 in Calcutta to a Bengali family, originally from East Bengal. Her father is the veteran critic and film-maker Chidananda Dasgupta. Her mother Supriya Dasgupta is the cousin of renowned Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. She spent her childhood in Hazaribagh and Kolkata and had her schooling initially in South Point and later mostly in Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata. She studied her Ba, English honors in Presidency College, Calcutta but did not complete the degree.

A leading actress of the late 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, she has received eight BFJA Awards, five for best actress,two for best supporting actress and one for lifetime achievement She is the winner of three National Film Awards and nine international film festival awards for her direction in films. She was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, by the government of India in 1987.

In addition to acting in films, Sen has also been directing films since 1981. Sen made her film debut at the age of 15. Aparna Sen acted in little theatre groups and commercial theatres for a period of time. She was also editor of a popular Bengali magazine (Sananda) for long time.

Beside this Sen has served on juries at film festivals around the world. In 1989 she was a member of the jury at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival. In 2008, she was elected into the International Jury of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. In 2013, she headed the jury of the second Ladakh International Film Festival.

In 1987, the then President of India, Giani Zail Singh bestowed the Padma Shri on Sen in recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema. Since then, she has received several lifetime achievement awards.
