Kolkata: A woman and her 10-month-old child had a miraculous escape after falling under the 12303 Up New Delhi-bound Poorva Express, moments after the train started from Howrah station.
“The train started on schedule at 8.05am from Platform 9. Even as people watched, a woman clutching her child made a wild rush towards the S-3 sleeper class coach of the train. She missed her step and the grip of the handle as the train was moving and slipped through the gap between the platform and the train. It was 8.07am then and fortunately, a deputy station superintendent was passing the spot. He immediately pulled out his walkie-talkie and spoke to the train guard, asking him to apply emergency brakes,” a railway official said.
The train stopped immediately, and railway employees crawled under the train, expecting to see a gruesome site. “It was a pleasant surprise to find the child crying and the woman alive with some minor bruises. We carefully brought her out from under the train. After first-aid, the woman was declared fit to travel. The train finally left the station at 8.11am,” one of the rescuers said.
Rescuers said the woman and her child was saved as she kept still and remained in the space between the platform wall and the rail even as the wheels passed. In January a woman slipped through the gap between the platform and a metro train at the Rabindra Sarobar station. She too survived with minor bruises. A couple of days ago a 42-year-old woman died after slipping through the gap between the platform and a train at the Palghar station in Maharashtra.
