Moratorium lifted, Pak hangs Twelve

Karachi: After Pakistan’s PM Nawaz Sharif lifted a defecto moratorium on capital punishment on December 17, Pakistan hanged 12 male convicts including many dreaded terrorists on Tuesday. The moratorium on capital punishment was lifted after a brutal attack at a school claimed the lives of 129 students and 9 teachers last year. The mass slaughter pressurized the Pak government to do more to tackle the menace of Islamist insurgency in the country.

“They were not only terrorists, they included the other crimes, some of them were murderers and some did other heinous crimes,” the ministry spokesman said of the 12 executed at various jails.

Human rights groups say many convictions in Pakistan are highly unreliable. There are more than 8,000 Pakistanis on death row.
