Mohammed Shami Trolled For Wife’s Gown, Gets Support

New Delhi: Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was at the receiving end of social media beamers for his wife Hasin Jahan’s choice of clothes on Monday. Undeterred by the criticisms of alleged “un-Islamic” behaviour, the paceman from Amroha hit back hard. Soon a chorus of support, notably from cricketer Mohammad Kaif and Bollywood writer Javed Akhtar, drowned out the notes of disapproval.

This is what happened: On Christmas night, Shami uploaded some family pictures with his wife and daughter. “Beautiful moments,” is how he titled them on Facebook and Twitter. All three were in western attire, with Shami coordinating the colour of his tie with his wife’s maroon sleeveless gown. “We hate you shami. .. apni aurat ki izzat ki nilami mat karo Bhai…” wrote Sabas Afreen commenting on the picture.

Allah se daro…Islam ko badnam mat karo (Fear Allah. Don’t defame Islam,” Sabas Afreen commented on the picture. Others like Anwar Mathammal thought nothing of referring to Jahan as Shami’s “property”. “This beauty private property of u..dear …not showing 4 others..,” he wrote.

Comments in a similar vein followed, more on Facebook than on Twitter. However, these were soon outnumbered by others like Goushul Aziz who commented on Facebook: “Idiots get your home correct than put fingers on others. Don’t create bad image of yourself by publicly showing you idiotic comments. Allah is there to judge who is correct whoz not (sic).”

On Twitter, cricketer Mohammad Kaif said, “The comments are really really Shameful. Support Mohammed Shami fully. There are much bigger issues in this country. Hope sense prevails.”

Songwriter Javed Akhtar chimed in, tweeting: “The dress that Mrs Shami is wearing is extremely elegant and dignified. Anyone who has any problem with it is sick in his mind.

The cricketer himself appeared unfazed. He reposted the pictures on Monday, with the caption: “Har kisi ko jindagi mai mukam ni milta, kuch kismat wale hi hote hai jinhe ye nasib hota hai.! Jalteee (sic) rahooooo (Not everyone gets to a good position in life. A few fortunate ones do. Keep getting jealous!)”
