Kolkata: The tussle between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a new turn after Mamata Banerjee alleged that the state’s Republic Day tableau had been rejected by the central government.
“It hurts me to say that this year the Bengal tableau has been rejected from the Republic Day parade. But why? This is an insult for our state,” Mamata Banerjee alleged on Friday. Speaking at the inauguration of the Kolkata Chirstmas Festival on Park Street, Mamata informed that the theme for Bengal’s R-Day tableau was unity and the aim was to show how harmony among people could only ensure peace in the country. “Is that the reason why they rejected us?” she asked.
“Our Republic Day tableau have been awarded the first prize twice in recent years. In 2015 we had sent one tableau depicting our Kanyashree project but they did not accept it. The same project went on to win the United Nation public service award,” Mamata said.
The tableaux representing various states are selected by an expert committee set up by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which is the nodal agency that organises the grand show on Rajpath each year. But Banerjee claimed that despite adhering to the rules set by the committee, the state has been kept in the dark about its proposed tableau.
