Miscreants Torches Trucks At Indo-Bangladesh Border

Malda: Tension gripped Mahadipur land customs station on the India-Bangladesh border in Malda when a group of miscreants torched four trucks on Wednesday morning.

Englishbazar police and fire engines from Malda rushed to the spot. Nobody has been arrested so far.

The land custom station is located about 90km from here. The police and local sources said the truck drivers were regularly threatened by miscreants who extort money from them.

A commotion occurred when the truck drivers refused to pay extortion money to the goons on Tuesday evening at Piasbari near Mahadipur. Later, on Wednesday morning, the miscreants set fire on four trucks which were parked in the private parking area of the customs station.

“When the goons set fire on the vehicles, we had called the police. Fire tenders came from Malda also but before that, the locals managed to douse the fire,” a local resident said.

The representatives of truck owners and exporters association alleged that collusion between the extortionists and the police had led to such frequent incidents in the locality.

They mentioned that couple of years back, a truck driver had been murdered by the miscreants on the same issue and so far, the police had not taken any step.
