Imphal: With militants outfits calling for bandh in Imphal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday will inaugurate the 105th session of the Indian Science Congress in Imphal.
The Coordinating Committee (Corcom) formed by six proscribed ( KCP, KYKL, PREPACK, PLA, UNLF) underground organisations in Manipur called for a 17-hour shutdown in Manipur to coincide with the state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh on March 16.
After inaugurating the event, he would lay the foundation stone of the National Sports University, a thousand Anganwadi centres and 19 residential complexes for teachers, doctors and nurses, an official statement said in New Delhi. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Luwangpokpa Multi Sports Complex and address a gathering.
The Corcom said the shutdown will come into effect from March 16. It appealed to the people not to participate in official functions and said examinations and other essential services will be exempt from the proposed shutdown.
Adya Prasad Pandey, vice-chancellor of the Manipur University, has appealed to them to not to bother the university staff and students, who are assisting the delegates to reach Imphal. Police has been carrying out searches in trouble-prone areas ahead of the VVIP visit.Official sources said additional security forces from other districts had been deployed in the areas which Modi and Singh will visit.
