New Delhi: MHA Ranks Dhupguri, Jalpaiguri Police Station As No 4 In The Country. The Valapattanam police station in the district has figured in the list of top 10 police stations in the country. The list was released by the Union Home Ministry on Saturday.

The police station, established in 1905, was selected on the basis of various criteria, including its performance that was assessed by the quality control team of the Ministry.

Valapattanam is the only police station in the State that has found place in the top-10 list.
“The Valapattanam police station ranks ninth in the list released by the Home Ministry,” Additional Director General of Police (North Zone) Rajesh Dewan told. He said the parameters for the selection would be available on Monday.

Police sources said the list was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, the first day of a three-day conclave of top police officers at Tekanpur in Madhya Pradesh. The survey of police stations for the ranking was done by a team of Intelligence Bureau officers.

When contacted, Valapattanam Sub-Inspector Sreejith Koderi said he had not received amy information about the selection of his station as one of the best police stations. He said a few months ago, a team of officers from New Delhi had made an unannounced visit to assess the performance of the station on the basis of 30-odd criteria, which included arrests, disposal of petitions, law-and-order control, warrant execution, crime rate, theft detection, station hygiene, including that of lock-up room, bathrooms and barracks of police personnel, he added.

The team also assessed the programmes conducted by the police station for police personnel, including family get-togethers, he said. Mr. Koderi, who has been Sub-Inspector at the station for the past two-and-a-half years, recalled that the team had commented that the station building was old but well maintained.

The station was shifted to the present building in 1983, he said adding that the police personnel involved in improving the performance and quality of the station premises were not aware of any system of selecting best police stations in the country.
