Kolkata: With Durga Puja just a month away, the city is all geared to make the optimum use of weekend to make purchase, Metro Railway has decided to run 570 additional services on Saturdays and Sundays till October 18. Metro is also preparing a Puja schedule to suit pandal hoppers.
“This special measure was taken after analyzing the passenger rush trends. We anticipate heavy rush during the weekends in the run up to the Pujas. There will be 50 more services on Saturdays, bringing it at par with weekdays. Starting September 19, the number of services on Saturdays will go up to 274 from the existing 224. On Sundays, there will be 174 services instead of the normal 110. The services will be run at intervals of 7, 8, 10 and 15 minutes. We believe that this will be helpful to commuters,” said Indrani Banerjee, CPRO, Metro Railway.
Though the number of commuters normally dips during weekends, there is a trend among people to use the Metro on holidays before festivals. Unless the number of services is increased, even daily users find it difficult to travel due to the heavy rush. The situation worsens in the evenings when shoppers return, with their bargains taking up additional space. More services are also required as many users from the suburbs prefer to use the Metro during their shopping sprees. Unused to the ways of Metro travel, they face trouble if there is too much rush.
