Kolkata: Police have seized from a coldstorage in Kolkata as much as 20,000 kgs of meat suspected to have been obtained from carcasses in dumping grounds in and around the city.
The meat that was seized from Hindustan Ice and Cold Storage Company, on Gas Street, was to be supplied to eateries in and around Calcutta, police said. The compound has been sealed.
A member of the cop team that raided the facility said 1,000 packets of meat, weighing 20 tonnes, were kept in freezers.
“We have sent the meat to the state forensic laboratory for tests. The meat will be brought from Budge Budge,” an officer of Budge Budge police station said.
Thursday’s raid followed the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Sunny Mallik. Sunny was rounded up from Nawada in Bihar on Tuesday after a team from Budge Budge police station tracked his movement for days.
A resident of Shyambazar, Sunny had allegedly fled after two men were arrested on April 20 while they were said to be smuggling out meat of dead animals from a dumping ground in Budge Budge
