Kolkata: Atlast the wait is over. Amost after a span of 6 years the National Club Of India will play in the AFC Cup. By defeating Royal Wahingdoh by 2-0 at the Barasat Stadium on Wednesday, Bagan has sealed their spot at the AFC Cup for the next season.
According to the rule of the AFC cup, the champions of the Federation Cup and the I League get the green signal to play in the international tournament. By winning the Federation Cup, Bengaluru FC has almost set their foot in the tournament. Now, if BFC wins the I League, MB goes through being in the second place. And if Bagan claims the national title, they become the obvious choice. So in all probabilities, Mohun Bagan goes into the AFC Cup. Third placed Wahingdoh and fourth placed East Bengal are nowhere in contention in terms of points to beat Bagan who now sits happily on 35 points, with two matches to go.
Last time when Bagan played in the AFC Cup was in 2009-10. Unfortunately, MB had digested 12 goals in the group stage and were eliminated. The only goal scored by Mohun Bagan then came from the boot of Rakesh Masih.
