Kolkata: Update: MLA Nayana Banerjee visited the spot, locals accused the fire department of responding late to the crisis. On the other hand fire department refuted the allegations. At least 50 to 60 shops have been reduced to ashes by the fire.
Update: Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee reached the spot to assess the situation. Fire fighters faced difficulty in bringing the fire under control as the area was congested and efforts are on to evacuate people from inside the market. This comes within a month of a major fire breaking out inside a shopping complex in the New Market area.
So far it is not clear if anybody is trapped inside the huge market, which was thrown open to the British in 1874.
Update: The fire gutted Alupatty and Machpatty area of the market completely, firefighters are facing problems to douse the fire as the area is too congested and no proper fire safety measure is planned in the market. The fire has been contained although the flames are still raging.

A massive fire rages at the Alupatty, fish market in New Market area of the city on Monday. Fire brigade rushed to the spot and deployed 20 engine to douse the flames.
No report of anyone being injured has been received so far. Authorities evacuated people from the area, and the firefighters are trying to contain the flames. Property worth in Lakhs was gutted by the fire.
