Mexico: An 8.0 magnitude earthquake has been detected off the coast of southern Mexico, the US Geological Survey said. Widespread, hazardous tsunami waves were possible, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
The tremor hit in the Pacific Ocean near the border of Mexico and Guatemala.People in Mexico City ran out into the streets after the quake struck, a Reuters witness said.
The authorities in New Zealand are now assessing whether the powerful quake could generate a tsunami along the coastline.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management and GNS Science said that “if a tsunami had been generated it was not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 12 hours.”
