Kolkata: A massive earthquake rattled Myanmar on Wednesday evening sending tremors across east and north India. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the 6.8 magnitude tremor struck central Myanmar near the Indian border.
European Mediterranean Seismological Centre amends its previous measurement of earthquake 190 km SW of Mandalay (Myanmar), now it is 6.8. Earthquake tremors were felt also Kolkata and suburbs. Tremors were felt in Guwahati, Shilong, Patna, Dehradun, Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand and its adjoining areas like Noida and Ghaziabad.
The quake felt In West Bengal’s Birbhum, East Midnapore and adjoining areas. West Bengal state government declared holiday due to earthquake. Metro also stopped due to tremors.
The epicenter was, 25km W of Chauk, Burma. 2016-08-24 17:04:55 at epicenter (22m ago, depth 84km). People panicked and fled out of buildings in Kolkata and Guwahati. In fact, over the past week, there have been a spate of smaller earthquakes across the north east.
