Kolkata: Bhangar has turned a battleground over land grabbing issue. Violent clashes between police and public have been raging in the area. Police have mentioned in its secret report to the state government about Maoist intervention leading to the whole pandemonium in the area.
40 students from Jadavpur University have allegedly incited violence to the peaceful protest. A group of Maoists and students are said to have taken refuge in the village since two months to organize the mass protest.
The state government sent a Kolkata Police team to Bhangar to identify the “outsiders” and arrest them. A Khamarait villager admitted that “outsiders” -scientists, environmentalists, students from Jadavpur University , and Left-leaning parties -were supporting them.
Two people have lost their lives and many have been wounded in the violence. In the meeting with DG, ADG in Bhawani Bhavan, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sought a report from the security forces and urged to send more police personnel to the area if required.
Meanwhile students of Jadavpur University have staged a protest in the campus’s Gate no. 4 over police’s role in the clashes.
Bhangar have been facing a lot of issues over the construction of the Power Grid substation since the last six months. It however took a violent turn when two persons were detained on Monday.
