Manas Bhuiya’s Advanced Bail Plea Rejected

Kolkata: The advance bail plea for Congress leader Manas Bhuiya was rejected by the High Court on Monday.

In the latest instance, a booth committee president of the Trinamool Congress at Dubrajpur in West Midnapore’s Sabang Assembly segment was killed in an attack.

Blaming Congress candidate for Sabang seat and outgoing MLA Manas Bhuniya for allegedly leading the attack, Trinamool Congress chief spokesperson Derek O’Brien has demanded that Bhuniya should be booked as an accused.

Joydeb Jana (32), Trinamnool president of booth no 247 at Dubrajpur, was returning to his home on a motorbike after an election campaign around 10.30 pm yesterday when he was attacked by a group of armed men near a Kali temple on the outskirts of Mithapukur area. Jana died on the spot; police recovered his dead body post-midnight and sent it for an autopsy.

Trinamool Congress has alleged that Jana has been murdered under a premeditated plan hatched by the Congress candidate for Sabang seat and outgoing MLA Manas Bhuniya.

“For the past three days, Manas Bhuniya had been lodging repeated complaints with the police demanding he be arrested despite their being no charges against him. With the police not giving into the illegal demand, a group of Congress-CPM workers led by Manas Bhuniya attacked Jana last night and killed him on the spot,” Trinamool Sabang candidate Nirmal Ghosh alleged this morning.

Ghosh said that the Congress West Midnapore district president Bikash Bhuniya was also among the attackers.

Within hours of the Trinamool allegation, deceased Jana’s family lodged a FIR against 22 persons for the killing. The list of accused includes Manas Bhuniya and Bikash Bhuniya.

In Kolkata, Trinamool chief spokesperson Derek O’Brien said in a statement that Congress, CPI-M and BJP were resorting to ‘bloody tactics’ of vendetta because their election campaigns were failing.

“The local Congress candidate Manas Bhuniya lodged a complaint against Joydeb Jana. Even as late as yesterday he was conducting enquiries, following up and plotting the murder. All evidence points to the fact. We demand he be booked as an accused in the case,” O’Brien has said adding that the “law and order is under the Election Commission.”

Reacting to the allegation, Bhuniya said that this has exposed the bankruptcy of Trinamool and its chief Mamata Banerjee.

“The whole day yesterday, I was campaigning at Pingla and police, Election Commission’s MCC team were with me. I returned to the Sabang party office only late in the night, hence only can easily make out how much water is there in the allegation,” he said.

“Furthermore, deceased Jana was a notorious criminal, and around 200 complaints had been lodged against him by the villagers. Now, Trinamool is claiming that he was their party,” Bhuniya added.

Incidentally, deceased Jana was a co-accused in the alleged gang-rape of a local CPI-M leader’s wife at Bural gram panchayat area last evening. The CPI-M leader has lodged an FIR at Sabang police station naming Trinamool gram panchayat Rafiq Ali, Sandeep Khatua, Hari Kar, Jana, and others.
