Kolkata: In an attempt to modernise ration shops in the state, the state government
has signed a MoU with a private organisation which will turn the shops into a
Those branded products which one can find in a shopping mall, will be found in
ration shops from the fourth day of Ganesh Chaturthi. As a result of this
initiative by the food department, one can get soap, shampoo, potato chips, ice-
cream and health drinks at ration shops. Not only this, but all things will be
available with 10 percent discount. A total of 26 percent off on all products will
be offered too.
500 things of different brands will be available in the ration shops. Apart from
these, medicines for digestion and ointment to reduce pain will also be available.
According to a food department official, “There are several shopping malls under
this organisation (with whom the government has signed the MoU). According to the

In the World Trade Summit this year, the CM had given proposals to use the ration
shops in selling goods. After this, a private organisation expressed desire
following which a MoU was signed between the organisation and the food department
of the West Bengal government in last March. The organisation has been given the
responsibility of turning the ration shops into small shopping malls. The
organisation will provide refrigerator for storing ice-creams and modern billing
The ration shops in the state are already in danger. Atleast 22 thousand ration
shops are on its way to be shut down. From the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, this
service has been started at 6 ration shops of North 24 Parganas.
