Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the move by the Calcutta high court as on Friday, Justice Subrata Talukdar asked the state election commission to announce fresh dates for the panchayat polls and provide an additional day for filing nomination.
Mamata said “We want an early poll, as the temperature will be rising in May and in places like Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum it touches almost 50 degree celsius.” She said, “The Opposition is unwilling to hold the polls and for which they had moved the court, to stall it.”
The HC cancelled the SEC’s notification that had quashed its own order of extending the nomination by a day. The HC asked SEC to fix fresh dates for filing nomination, which was a contention of the Opposition.
Earlier, the Opposition had moved the HC seeking increase of time for filing nominations, as they alleged that Trinamool had unleashed terror in West Bengal and were not allowing Opposition candidates to file nominations.
