Kolkata: Poet Srijato faced the ire of the saffron brigade on Saturday night at Assam’s Silchar. Soon after getting the news, chief minister Mamata Banerjee called up the poet and assured to be by his side and enquired of his well-being.
According to sources, the CM assured help in every way. Prior to this, Hindu activists had filed FIR twice in the state against him. Even then, Mamata had stood beside him.
The poet had posted a new poem in his social media whose last two lines are given below:
“Amake dhorshon korbe joddin kobor theke tule-
condom porano thakbe, tomar oi dhormer trishule!”

These last two lines courted controversy and dre the ire of Hindu and non-Hindu activists.
Srijato had gone to attent a recitation programme named ‘Esho Boli’. While the programme was underway at the Park Hotel, the Hindu activists started protesting. With the help of police, he moved to Silchar’s circuit house safely. He is scheduled to return to Kolkata on Sunday.
Poet Subodh Sarkar has also stood by Srijato. He said, “We all are there beside Srijato. We will all take to the streets. On February 2, I am supposed to recite poem at Assam’s Sahitya Sabha. I will not recite my poem there. I will recite Srijato’s poem. This is my protest.”
