Mamata Refuses To Attend Niti Aayog Meet, Calls It Fruitless

Kolkata: CM Mamata Banerjee has once again snubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that she won’t be attending the Niti Aayog meet as the thinktank has no power and the meetings are “fruitless”.

In a 3-page long letter, Mamata Banerjee has informed PM Modi that although she has received a letter informing her about a meeting of the Governing Council of Niti Aayog on June 15, she won’t be attending the event.

Banerjee has listed out nine points to justify the reasons behind her skipping the crucial meet after the reappointment of the planning body. In the scathing letter, the Bengal chief minister has drawn parallels of Niti Aayog to its predecessor, the Planning Commission that was abolished by the Modi government when it took over in 2014.

She has said that the Planning Commission had a bottom-up approach where the body would hold regular meetings with state governments to solve problems and discuss resource mobilisation.

Mamata Banerjee repeated her disagreements with the abolishment of the Planning Commission, which was replaced by the Niti Aayog. She writes, “Unfortunately, a new body called NITI Ayog was formed on 1st January, 2015 in place of Planning Commission, without assigning any financial powers to assist the States…”

“Given the fact that the NITI Ayog has no financial powers and the power to support State Plans, it is fruitless for me to attend the meeting of a body that is bereft of any financial powers,” she has said in the letter.

Mamata Banerjee has also lashed out against the Modi government saying even several Niti Aayog bosses have made statements demanding that they be given some powers to allocate funds for developmental work in states.
