Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wants to focus on fish production. On that issue, Chief Minister attended task-force meeting at Nabanna on Thursday. She directed to increase the fish production in the state. CM Mamata also ordered not to catch Small fishes.
The State Government is focusing on maximization of fish production through the intervention of technologies, adding water bodies under aqua-farming, scientific feeding and improved managerial practices.
Earlier, strict guidelines were issued for Khoka Hilsa or small hilsa. The State Fisheries Department issued a notification that fishermen not allowed to catch small fishes. If they held then the fishermen will be punished. If hilsa fish weighing less than 500 grams, then it will be punishable.
Hilsa could become the first Indian fish to get legal protection. There is a ban on hilsa catching in West Bengal from April 15 to June 14. Fishermen say they also do not want to catch Khoka Hilsa. So this deadline is extended for one and a half months.
