Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee government today ordered a CID probe in the alleged dowry death of Mita Mondal, a meritorious former student of Jadavpur University, at her in-law’s place at Uluberia in Howrah district recently.

Twenty-four-year-old Mita of Sukantapally, Garia in south Kolkata, who had married Rana Mondal of Kushberia in Uluberia, her former classmate from Jadavpur University, was found dead on Dashami with multiple injuries on her body, a tragedy that happened less than six months of her marriage.

Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee told reporters at Nabanna that the death of Mita would be investigated by the CID.

On April 22, after Mita Das of Sukantapally, Garia, marriedRana Mondal of Kushberia in Uluberia, her former classmates from Jadavpur University (JU) had asked for a treat. The gutsy 24-year-old, who had secured a first class in Bengali MA, had promised a grand feast the day “she felt liberated from all her bondages”.

On Tuesday morning, less than six months into her marriage, Das allegedly committed suicide. Her relatives, though, claim Mondal and his family killed her.
