Mamata Lays Foundation Of Greenfield University

Darjeeling: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of the new Greenfield University at Mungpoo.

“Today is a day of pride for Darjeeling. We have laid the foundation of ‘Darjeeling Hill University’ today. We will name this campus after Tenzing Norgay. Another campus will come up which will be named after Kanchenjunga. One more campus will be named after Bhanu Bhakta ji.” said Mamata.

The engineering college here will be connected to this university. We are setting up an education hub at Kurseong. Presidency University is also setting up a campus here. An education hub is coming up at Kalimpong also, Mamata added.

She also held a high level review meeting with Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) officials. Tourism will be getting a major facelift in the Hills and new tourism projects will be discussed in the review meeting.

The Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of Greenfield University on September 5 at a government programme at Darjeeling Chowrasta. As per the GTA agreement, the Centre was supposed to set up a Central University in the Hills. However, no such initiative has been taken so far. So, the CM has taken it upon herself to gift a new university to the Hills.

It may be mentioned, in Kurseong, Dow Hill is being developed as an Education Hub. The Himalayan Centre of Presidency University is also being established at the same place. The new university in Mungpoo will boost the education sector in the Hills.
