Mamata Bans ’10 To 20-Wheel’ Trucks To Protect Bridges

Kolkata: If there is no ban on overloading truck movement over the bridge then many more bridges like Posta, Majerhat will be Collapsed. Bridges have turned into weak due to the extra truckload. After Majerhat bridge collapse, Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday banished heavy goods vehicles from the city to “protect” its roads, bridges and flyovers.

Prabir Chatterjee, Joint Secretary of the Federation of West Bengal Truck Operators Association said that All bridges are damaged due to heavy goods trucks movement over the bridges. The worst damaged bridges are-

1) Ramkrishna Bridge, Kalipur-Arambagh, Hooghly
2) Serampore Railway Bridge
3) Baidyabati- Serampore Delhi road Railbridge
4) Harin khola Bridge, Damodar River, Hooghly
5) Dunkuni Railway Bridge, Hooghly
6) Chapadanga Mundheswar Bridge
7) Dhakuria Bridge
8) Bijon Setu, Ballyganj
9) Chingrihata Bridge
10) Belgharia Express Bridge
11) Vidyasagar Bridge – Sealdah
12) RG Kar Bridge
13) Tala Bridge
14) Sukanta Bridge, Jadavpur
15) Chetla Durgapur Bridge
16) Taratala Brace Bridge
17) Tollynala Bridge-
18) Jasab Road Setu
19) Barasat Flyover
20) Raidighi-Kankanadighisetu (Sundarbans, 24 Parganas)
21) Durgapur Bridge (Burdwan – road to Bakukha)
22) Panskura Bridge-East Midnapore
23) Bhagirathi Bridge, Baharampur
24) Farakka Bridge

There are also many more bridges, which are poor.

Prabir Chattopadhyay further complains, 10-wheelers truck started traveling on the bridge from 2005. Then the trucks of 12, 14, 18, 222 wheeler were came out. A 14-wheeler truck carrying capacity of 25 tons goods. But now heavy trucks are carrying more than 80-90 tonnes goods. A group of businessmen is doing this.
