Maldah: Tension gripped West Bengal’s Maldah district as police baton charged on a group of agitating civic police volunteers on Monday. The incident took place in Rathbari area where around 5000 civic police volunteer assembled and marched to submit a deputation to the police Super citing various demands.
As per reports situation turned hostile when the march was stopped by Police. The agitators pelted stones on the cops who intern lathicharged on the mob to control the situation. At least 20 marchers suffered injuries and were rushed to the Maldah district hospital.
The state president of civic police union Sanjay Pariha said that the march was a peaceful one to forward their legitimate demands to the authority. He also accused the police of resorting to unprovoked baton charge on the marchers.
On the other hand district police officials have junked the allegations and accused the civic police personnel of resorting to violence. A huge police force along with RAF has been deployed in the area to contain any unwanted situation.
