Malda Faces Ganga Erosion Threat


Malda: The MET office has forecast heavy rain again in the state. This alert has been issued in different district of West Bengal. Facing the threat of erosion after the water level of the Ganga reached the danger level, Malda has is on red alert.

Erosion has been taking place at a stretch of around 3 km in that area. Meanwhile, Karal village of Malda has already lost hundred hectares of land. The soil erosion has affected mostly the areas like – RatuaI block Bilaimari village Panchayat’s Naya Bilaimari, Khashchamna, Bilaimari, Janjalitola area. Nearly two thousand families are living in fear of homelessness.

The two villages may be lost in the erosion of the river any moment and the villagers were provided with disaster management kits, he said.

The higher water levels cause the river to wash away the riverbank. This is soil erosion on a dramatic scale.Several houses have already washed away. As a result, families are living in homeless conditions. Malda district collector along with the block officer, will visit the site on Tuesday. If necessary, people in the area will be moved away. The administration has already arranged it. Locals are also moving away by themselves.

The rescue team is facing problem while reaching the area due to the heavy flow of rivers. It has to be acknowledged that its impact is also being read in rescue. Executive Engineer Pranab Kumar Samanta said, “The erosion has started. We are working day and night with our staff. But the water level is rising drastically. Water also entering in several villages in the low land areas of the Ganges.We have started rescuing them.”
