Sindhu, 21, is now assured to win at least silver when she faces World Number 1 Carolina Marin of Spain tomorrow. This would be India’s second medal so far in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

As Sindhu defeated her Japanese rival in straight sets (21-19, 21-10) in the semi-finals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was one of the first to congratulate her, tweeting an old photo of him with the shuttler.
